This family of educators has long thought of starting an educational establishment in order to assist in the nation's struggle against illiteracy. The family was strongly convinced that it would be a successful venture in all aspects. They have the experience and the small family saving to begin.
The family selected a site at Sendafa, forty kilometers north-east of the capital city, Addis Ababa. The reason they selected the site was because Kassu & Almaz had worked there for seven years with good reputations as director and teacher respectively. Since the educational problem was grave in Sendafa, the local authorities were willing to provide the land to establish the school. They soon managed to secure a 3,540 square meters of land in the center of town.
We had a family saving of about 120,000 birr (13.5 thousand USD). In less than six months we were able to construct three classrooms and with a assistance from friends and family were able to reasonably equip the classrooms. We admitted children at Kindergarten and grade one level. The school opened its doors on September 26, 2005 and it was named “Almikas” which is derived from our names Almaz and Kassu.
In the first year we registered 83 children with a reasonable fee of 60 birr (about 6.8 USD) a month. The second year, we constructed two more classrooms and our enrollment grew to 168 children, 8 teachers, 2 guards and 2 janitors. We started the school in Amharic (a largely spoken local language) although English is the medium of instruction.
The school envisions to produce students and scholars who have a good command of the English language and are equipped with the knowledge of Science and Mathematics in order to lift Ethiopia out of poverty and into the list of advanced emerging countries of the world.
